Insect bites and stings

During the summer season, pharmacies will see more patients walking in to the pharmacy or being referred from General Practice via CPCS with insect bites and stings.  This module is designed to support to whole pharmacy team in feeling confident to manage these patients in the pharmacy.

Virtual Outcomes have also included a flow diagram in the course to show when to refer due to an infection and as you can imagine, bites and stings become infected far less often than people think.

This module will help all staff:

  • Identify the most common bites and stings?
  • Know why venom from bees, hornets and wasps is more likely to cause a severe systemic hypersensitivity reaction?
  • Know that redness, itchiness, pain and swelling are more likely to be an allergic reaction than an infection?

Many GPs are unlikely to be involved in this care even if patient has had symptoms for 10 days?

This online training is provided free of charge to all community pharmacies located in Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth. The training has been funded by Community Pharmacy South Central to help pharmacies meet their requirement to deliver services and support health promotion activities throughout the year.
