Academy Event 1: 'Pharmacy - Keeping our Patients Safe'

It is our personal and collective responsibility to provide care to our patients receiving medicines so that they achieve better health outcomes and their quality of life is improved. We do all we can to keep our patients’ safe and yet drug-related problems resulting in adverse reactions and sometimes hospitalisation are common. Almost half of these are preventable. Last year, the World Health Organisation launched their third global health challenge to reduce the level of severe, avoidable harm related to medications by 50% over the next 5 years, globally. More recently, the NHS has commissioned a report on patient safety in England and established a working group to make recommendations.

We all play an important part in achieving these goals. Patient safety is a key priority and responsibility for every pharmacy professional, their employers, the pharmacy sector, the NHS and patients.

Please join us for the first Academy series to make more of a difference:

  • Understand why addressing medicines-related harm is so important
  • Know what your local GP Practices are doing to reduce medicines most likely to cause harm and how you can help (PINCER)
  • Keeping patients safe – the importance of mindset and culture (what can we learn from the aviation industry)
  • The impact of medicines-related harm; personal experiences
  • Why and how medicines-related harm occurs – prescribing, dispensing and patient-initiated
  • Practical ways to improve patient safety in your own pharmacy
  • How to complete your QPS Patient Safety report
  • What to do if an error occurs
  • Have a simple action plan to implement with your team
  • Complete a Revalidation CPD entry

Our events will be practical, engaging and inspiring.

There will be some simple pre-workshop reflection to complete before attending so that you can contribute fully to the event. This will be sent to you 2-3 weeks before the event or on registration.
