Update to Serious Shortage Protocols concerning Fluoxetine by the Secretary of State

PSNC News Alert
On 3rd October 2019 it was announced that the Secretary of State had authorised three Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) to help manage the supply of some formulations of Fluoxetine. These SSPs were put in place to manage stock and to try to ensure that fewer patients have to return to their prescriber.
SSP02 Fluoxetine 30mg capsules and SSP03 Fluoxetine 40mg capsules have been extended (SSP01 for Fluoxetine 10mg capsules was withdrawn from 23.55pm Friday 25th October 2019). The extension dates can be seen in the table below:
SSP | Current expiry date |
SSP02: Fluoxetine 30mg capsules | This SSP has been varied – the revised end date is now 20th November 2019 |
SSP03: Fluoxetine 40mg capsules | This SSP has been varied – the revised end date is now 20th November 2019 |
These expiry dates may be brought forward or extended, and the content may be amended throughout this period. Pharmacists should ensure they are using the current version of an SSP before supplying an alternative product.
