Resources for raising awareness

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS), the ICB and Community Pharmacy Hampshire and Isle of Wight have worked together to create resources for a public awareness campaign regarding the fire risks associated with emollient products.

This safety campaign has been developed following some tragic local and national fire incidents involving individuals who used emollient products.

Pharmacies are aware of the fire risks of emollient products, and frequent information regarding this is shared within updates, communications and training. Therefore, it was deemed that any campaign to raise awareness of the associated fire risk needed to focus on the public as an audience.

Pharmacies will receive resources to support the emollients safety campaign:

  • 1 x A4 poster – for displaying within pharmacy. This poster can be displayed indefinitely / until you see fit.
  • 3 x edge of shelf strips – for displaying within pharmacy with emollient products. These can be displayed indefinitely / until you see fit.
  • 100 postcards – to give to patients who are users of emollient products. It would be recommended that these postcards are prioritised for the below patients:
  • Deliveries of emollients
  • High usage of emollients
  • Known smoker in the household
  • Other impairments or health / social vulnerabilities present (i.e. physical or mental health impairment; self neglect)

Should a pharmacy like a further supply, contact HIWFRS via email at safeguarding@hantsfire.gov.uk .

Please be aware that additional postcards being supplied are dependent upon available stock levels.

Each campaign resource has a QR code which can be scanned to access the HIWFRS webpage guidance on emollient risks. The resources are also designed to be a conversation starter between a patient and a member of your team to enable the fire risks to be discussed in person if preferable.

Digital versions of these resources are also available here:

Social media: HIWFRS will also be promoting emollient safety awareness through social media channels.
