Pharmacy Staff General Training Requirements

Make sure minimum requirements are in place

Please, use the information below as a minimum guide and make sure that your pharmacy team is trained accordingly to what their role requirement and the services they support.

The GPhC expects any new team members to have started their training within 3 months of starting role. The Pharmacy must keep an up-to-date learning and development matrix for the team for the GPhC to review on inspection.

Healthcare Assistants

  • Must have started or completed an accredited MCA course.
  • If involved in dispensary activities, must completed either a combined MCA/dispenser course, dispensary assistant course or dispensary stock control course.
  • Data security training (as per relevant legislation)
  • H&S training (as per relevant legislation)

Dispensing Assistant

  • Must have started or completed an accredited course.
  • Data security training (as per relevant legislation)
  • H&S training (as per relevant legislation)

Pharmacy Technicians

  • Must have completed an accredited course and be registered with the GPhC.
  • Data security training (as per relevant legislation)
  • H&S training (as per relevant legislation)
  • Level 2 Safeguarding
  • Enhanced DBS check

Accuracy Checking Dispensers or Technicians

  • Must have also completed an accredited course for that role.
  • Data security training (as per relevant legislation)
  • H&S training (as per relevant legislation)

Healthy Living Pharmacy status is a contractual requirement that every pharmacy must comply with.

  • At least 1 WTE Health Champion RSPH Level 2 course in Understanding health improvement
  • At least one member of the team to have completed a recognised HLP Leadership course.

All employed Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians should have had an Enhanced DBS check.

PQS

PQS criteria varies year to year but requires the completion of certain training to claim against a domain, e.g. Dementia Friends, Infection Prevention and Control, Antibiotic Guardians and Stewardship.
