Launch of Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness Campaign

From 10th January – this is a mandatory annual health campaign

From 10 January to 2nd February 2026 (materials can be used again after the national Pharmacy First campaign in February), Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB are asking all Community Pharmacies to participate in a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) awareness raising campaign as part of the ICB mandated annual health campaign.

The purpose of this campaign is to increase the number of people who are diagnosed and treated for CKD, as data suggests large numbers of people in Hampshire and Isle of Wight are currently living with undiagnosed and unmanaged CKD. One way to achieve this is to raise awareness of CKD and encourage people to undergo a kidney health check – either online or via booking an annual check at their GP practice.

To raise awareness, a variety of communication resources have been created by the Integrated Care Board and the national charity Kidney Care UK. All resources will be sent to pharmacies either via email or via post free of charge. These resources include posters, prescription bag leaflets, and a short video to display on digital screens. All resources include a QR code which links patients to a five-minute Kidney Health Checker which is hosted on the Kidney Care UK website.

We are asking all Community Pharmacies to undertake the following:

  • Display the posters and play the video for the digital screens (if possible) in prominent areas of the pharmacy where it is likely to attract the attention of patients.
  • Discuss with patients that the pharmacy is running a CKD awareness campaign, outlining what CKD is, its risk factors, and the importance of kidney health. For more information about this, please follow this link to the NHS webpages on CKD. Kidney Care UK have also collated CKD information and resources specifically for pharmacists, which can be found here.
  • Encourage patients to scan the QR code to learn about their kidney health via the Kidney Health checker. This checker indicates whether the user may be at higher risk of Chronic Kidney Disease. If they are, a letter will be generated which can be downloaded and shared with the patient’s GP.
  • The A5 leaflets could be attached to prescription bags of patients prescribed ‘higher risk’ medicines (shown below).
  • ramipril, lisinopril, enalapril, perindopril
  • losartan, candesartan, irbesartan, valsartan,
  • amlodipine, felodipine, lercanidipine, nifedipine, diltiazem, verapamil, bisoprolol, atenolol, carvedilol, doxazosin
  • spironolactone, eplerenone, indapamide, bendroflumethiazide, furosemide, bumetanide,
  • metformin, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, canagliflozin, alogliptin, linagliptin, sitagliptin, saxagliptin, pioglitazone, gliclazide, dulaglutide, liraglutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide, insulin,
  • ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, meloxicam,
  • omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole,
  • lithium

After the campaign, the ICB will send you a short online evaluation form to capture your experiences of participating in the campaign.

The campaign will be running with all local GP practices to ensure a joined up message across the primary care system.
